There is a Chaldean/Assyrian basketball tournament in January, hosted by St. Mary's Church. Ashor Chamoun is in charge of it and asked me if we were interested in bringing a team to play. To give you some insight into the tourney, first and foremost it's a family/community event, the proceeds collected go to help St. Mary's church. It would probably be a good idea to do something like that for our churchs too, maybe one tourney a quarter and each time for a different church (anyone that would be interested in setting that up with me, give me a call 248-933-4379). Nonetheless, it brings together some of the best Chaldean/ Assyrian players in the country (from, MI,IL,CA,AZ). There's also a party at night after the games. Some players from our league have played in it, including myself, Nick, Keith, and Steve. From my own experience, I can tell you that it was a lot of fun, very intense competition, and the best part about it was the 200 or so family and friends that came to watch and support their teams. I'd really like to send a team of 8-12 guys there, and the more that I think about it, I really want to organize something like this for our churches in OP, WB, Troy, and Sfld. Let me know what you guys think and who's interested.
Thanks,
E
p.s. did they have the Lance Atisha Tourney this year, I didn't hear anything about it?
Elton, if you need help, let me know, I'l be more than happy to help. They didn't have a Lance Atisha Tournament this year. I don't why though because I enjoyed either winningi t every year or being in the final game every year. :)
I think a huge winter league winter league would be cool. We can have the priest's advertise it for us and the cause. Imagine a 20 team league. By word of mouth, other chaldean leagues knowing, etc, I think it can be done. The biggest concern would be to make sure it remains a friendly affair.
Thanks Tony...so far Mike and Jalal have called me about it too. I agree, I think it can be great. I'd like to see how many guys are willing to help, and then in the coming weeks after one of our games, we can go to Ram's afterwards and discuss it. Anyone else interested?
Elton, there are so many ideas i'm thinking about right now...we can have a tourney involving the other chaldean leagues, like a CAL DREAM TEAM playing the other chaldean bball leagues teams in a tournament...we can have a traveling tournament just like you said and have a tourney at a different church every time to raise money...we can 100% do that january tourney for now, i'd be down for that...keep a brotha updated!!!
Elton pretty much summed it all up fellas, to be honest it's a real fun however competitive tournament. This year Chicago is coming back to keep the reign of championship in Detroit alive, also i just got off the wire with California and they are also sending 1 team that i hear is really strong. The CAL league has this opportunity to come to this tournament and show what they got. For more info you can contact me also at my e-mail ashor chamoun@hotmail.com.
