all this time Samer and i learned that we fast for 3 days cause of sodom and gomorrah...the town that went bad(where the term sodomy came from) that God punished...all of a sudden this year like more than 1 person have told us that we fast because a man was stuck in a whale!...this hayatt is not possible...anyway im curious to know if anyone else's parents told them the sperm whale story...if anyone can ask Abouna(or mike nafsou) i'd really appreciate it.
Hey Thomas, I always thought we fasted because of the Jonas and the Whale story and this is the first time I've heard anyone say that we fast for the Sodom and Gammorah story. Interesting.
The reason why our Churches sacrifice for Bautha is because of a numerous amount of sins that occured in Musil (northern city in Iraq). In the 1300's many people in Musil began to have marriages between brothers and sisters, homosexual acts, and many other sinful acts. These acts started to become part of a normal life style in this region of Iraq. The Churches were totally against these acts but it became out of control. Within time, leprocy (Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease which attacks the skin, peripheral nerves and mucous membranes (eyes, respiratory tract), begane to spread rapidly throughout the city of Musil. People were suffering and passing away by the dozens. One of the clergy men from the city asked the people to stop the wrong doing and to sacrifice food and drink for 3 days as an apology to God. I mean no water or food not even breast feeding for the infants. After the third day more and more people were becoming healthier and leprocy stopped spreading.
